Process

Are you feeling confused about what the journey of creating your new home might look like? Our process framework, outlined below, offers clarity on this.
A
Project Engagement and Setup
RIBA Stage 0 and 1 | Strategic Definition, Project Brief and Project Bible

Helping you get started with the process by guiding you through the RIBA Stage 0 and 1. This includes clarifying the 'Strategic Definition' and compiling a 'Project Brief', and our own 'Project Bible' to anchor the journey moving forward. This is an important process of getting to know each other and understanding what excites you, or in some cases scares you, about the path ahead. A thorough assessment at this early stage can act as a North Star and ensure the overall scheme stays true to your design and sustainability aspirations.

B
Design Development
RIBA Stage 2 and 3 | Concept Design and Spatial Coordination

Progressing through RIBA Stage 2 and 3 we navigate through the requirements of the previously compiled 'Project Bible' and apply creative and innovative thinking to design the home you want to build. This includes the 'Concept Design' and 'Spatial Coordination' work, progressing from the initial ideas through to a detailed scheme. We bring Passivhaus methodologies in at an early stage to ensure that the design is positively reacting to its site and other external factors, such as wind direction and the sun's path across the sky.

This is the point where you start seeing your home taking shape and we are able to discuss materials, flow and sustainability goals in more detail. We would look to submit your new home for planning permission at different points in this phase depending on the individual nature of the proposal.

C
Technical Development
RIBA Stage 4 | Technical Design

The 'Technical Design', RIBA Stage 4, is the part where we really scrutinise and stress test the design whilst preparing it for becoming a reality. We ensure that all the desires from the earlier design phase are systematically incorporated in a drawing pack that can be built from. In this stage we design out ambiguity and engage with specialists to make sure your home is buildable in the way you have envisaged. A thorough and comprehensive stage deliverable allows for a smoother journey on site, with less stress for you as the client.

D
On Site Support
RIBA Stage 5 | Construction

Getting to RIBA Stage 5, 'Construction', is an exciting accomplishment and you should be equipped with all the tools you need from the earlier stages to progress on site. There are, of course, areas where you may want support or details that may need further clarity and we can be there for you throughout this process to keep you confident that everything is moving in the right direction.

This is one of the most tailored phases of the journey as we want to ensure we are adding value at every interaction. Depending on the type of build, we can offer architectural support, act as your agent (to help you with key decisions and act on your behalf where needed) and generally be there for you, as required, at critical stages.

E
Aftercare
RIBA Stage 6 and 7 | Handover and In Use

You're in your new home, enjoying the final destination. Congratulations! Although we have now handed you the keys, it doesn't mean we have to say goodbye. We can create an aftercare service suited to your ongoing needs. This could be as simple as monthly check-in sessions to talk through any teething problems and control systems or it could be a longer term monitoring contract with maintenance, upgrades and further works planned. We want to know you are enjoying your new home as we intended, so this is an opportunity for us to take your feedback and apply it to future clients just like you!

Black arrow icon pointing down
The cost of building a personalised home in the UK can vary significantly based on the scale and location, and the level of customisation and sustainability features chosen. For high-quality, low-energy homes that include bespoke interior fit-outs, premium materials and advanced sustainable technologies, costs may start close to £2,000 per square metre but can exceed £6,000 per square metre for smaller, more intricate projects as these tend to require a higher level of adaptation. In addition, the upper estimates are likely to include not just the basic fabric of the building but also high-end finishes, custom joinery and specialised installations. It's essential to discuss your specific needs and expectations with your architect to get a detailed cost estimate tailored exclusively to your project.
