Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Nottinghamshire countryside, 'Brambles' is a standout project that showcases the potential of conservation area infills when objectively considered. Their previous design team had presented the clients with a lacklustre proposal, so a reimagined vision was being sought that could transform an uninspiring bungalow into a vibrant, multifunctional family home tailored to their evolving needs.

The Challenge

Andy and Iris, the homeowners, and the local planning authority were dissatisfied with that initial design. It had failed to inspire and resonate with their vision. The existing bungalow, situated in a conservation area, required a sensitive yet bold transformation. The challenge was to significantly enhance the living space without detracting from the character of the local area, navigating the strict regulatory environment and a fairly modest budget.

Design & Innovation

Leveraging the expertise from previous projects and with a deep understanding of sustainable materials, Warehome, in partnership with Brolly Design, proposed a visionary design. The project ambitiously expanded the living space by over 320%, whilst still integrating seamlessly with the conservation setting. A conscious use of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) to reduce the building's carbon 'cost' and a strategic layout that maximised natural lighting and views, exemplified cutting-edge sustainable building practices.

Key innovations

CLT Construction: Chosen for its speed of construction, sustainability, efficiency and cost, CLT provided a robust yet eco-friendly structural solution.

Maximised Natural Light: Large window installations ensured ample sunlight and a strong indoor-outdoor connection, providing stunning visual connections to the natural surroundings. The specification was tailored to manage solar gain for an enhanced overall building performance.

Spatial Efficiency: A clever layout with multi-functional areas including a home office, gym, and yoga space aligned perfectly with the clients’ lifestyle.

Client Experience

The redesign process was intensely collaborative. Regular virtual walkthroughs and real-time modifications allowed Andy and Iris to be intimately involved in every design decision, ensuring the final home truly reflected their desires and aspirations.
